Since mid-April Americans can benefit from a hugely reduced fee to renounce their US citizenship and many are now opting to take that route, campaigners say.

This is an advertisement for Fabien Lehagre whose motives seem unclear. Please stop magnifying anecdotal stories which are based on hearsay.

@SK I would imagine that these are people who already have a second nationality otherwise as you say they would become stateless. For example the UK doesn’t allow you to renounce your British nationality if you have no other and I expect it’s the same with the US.

As a US and EU Citizen, I wholeheartedly agree that life in the EU is made a lot more difficult and expensive than it needs to be just because of the stupid US tax laws. FATCA and FBAR make it so much harder to have a bank account in the EU. Then you always live under the threat of a $10K fine for not reporting your accounts even though they already know about them because banks had to tell them!

Renouncing citizenship for tax purposes is a complicated issue. So if you surrender your passport and you don't qualify as a citizen of another country, you'll have no passport. Also, renuncing citizenship has other ramifications taxes may still be due for example. So make run through all the scenarios, and sure you know what else you are rejecting before making the decision.
